The airport near Porto began in 1945 and was initially known as Pedras Rubras Airport, named for the place where the airport is at Pedras Rubras (“red rocks”). This title is still prevalent in the area. The property on which the airport is, was initially agriculture, characterized by fertile soils that enabled the cultivation of various cereals. It was renamed in 1990 after the former Portuguese Prime Minister, Francisco de Sá Carneiro, who died in a plane accident as he flew to the airport on 4 December 1980.
Porto Airport exceeded 10 million passengers a year for the first time on 6 December 2017.
Porto Airport has five designated parking lots, which are available 24 hours a day and have more than 2,000 parking. You can use all the car parks for short-term or long-term parking spaces, with dedicated parking lots in each, plus two car parks with underground parking lots. There is an enclosed parking area for passengers to drop off.
Parking costs differ per car park, but the lowest prices you can normally pay start at €1.90 an hour for short-stay parking and €5.50 a day for long-stay parking. When you book digitally in advance, incentives are eligible, but the waiting period for online booking is 3 hours. You need to reserve your spot at least 6 hours in advance of your arrival. If you pay on entry, you can pay with cash or bank card, either physically on the machines in the underground parking garage or at the automatic payment system in the parking lots.
There are reserved parking areas for disabled users, which are wider and more accessible than traditional parking spaces. Both places are situated next to the entry and exits and, when necessary, to the elevators. Airliners have a carrier program for disabled travelers, so please call the airline if assistance is needed.
If you drop a commuter at the airport, the first 10 minutes are free. After that, rates can become higher. The first extra 5 minutes would cost €1.00 (a minimum stay of 15 minutes) so each extra 5 minutes would cost €2.00. For the first hours, the price is €6.00 for every 15 minutes.
You must stay in the short-term parking area if you plan on staying for 15 minutes or less.
