Marseille Provence Airport, also widely known as the Airport de Marseille Provence, is an international airport that is 27 km (17 miles) northwest of Marseille. It is on the borders of Marignane, both municipalities of the Bouches-du-Rhône department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of France. The hinterland of the airport goes from Gap to Arles and from Toulon to Avignon.
It is one of the five busiest airports in France relying on the passenger traffic and the third largest in freight traffic. In 2012, the airport accomplished the fourth-fastest growth in European passenger numbers, at 12.7 percent, with 8.295.479 passengers. Marseille Provence Airport is Air France’s focal city. Throughout the summer of 2013, the airport operated 132 daily destinations, the highest bid in France after the Parisian airports. Previously known as Marseille – Marignane Airport, it has been under the management of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Marseille-Provence (CCI) since 1934.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Marignane was among the key points of activity for flying boats in France. It also acted briefly as a port for the Pan American World Airways Clipper travel vessels. Certain aircraft operators included Aéropostale and Air Union, which operated from Antibes in 1931. Marignane was also the hydroplane manufacturing location of Lioré et Olivier. Antoine de Saint-Exupery defines going back to Marignane airport with a fuel leak in chapter 8 of “Wind, Sand, and Stars,” before heading back to Tunis. The momentous event that notified his later summary of the crash in his best-known book, “The Little Prince.”
In September 2006, the airport launched two new MP2 terminals for budget carriers. In 2013, the airport broadened its retail and restaurant choices with 30 different shops and restaurants, including the first Burger King eatery in France as of 1997.
