Poznań – Lawica Henryk Wieniawski Airport, established in 1913, is among the earliest airports in Poland. It is situated 5 km (3.1 mi) west of the city center of Poznań. It takes its name from the district of Lawica, part of the Grunwald area of the region, although the airport is currently situated in the area of Ježyce.
After its establishment in 1913, the northern portion served as a strategic airport as an Imperial German air force base until 23 December 2009. The Southern Portion shall be reserved for civilian purposes. The possibility of transferring the airport to another site is also posed as a consequence of the flight route to the runway being situated directly above the region.
The airport is open to regional, domestic, and freight flights and general aviation. The modern terminal was completed in 2012 and will accommodate up to 3.5 million travelers a year. The pilots were unfamiliar with the adjacent airbase, Poznań – Krzesiny Airbase, which also has a 2,500 m (8,200 ft) runway. The runways are roughly in the same orientation: Lawica’s is 11/29 (true heading: 108/288), and Krzesiny’s is 12/30/. The two runways were almost parallel, with Krzesiny moving ahead first on the easterly approaches, the ones most commonly used. The Krzesiny airbase, on the other side, has two runways and lies southeast of the city center, while Poznań – Lawica lies on the west.
